... a fabulous large & stocky oak frame that has been gilded to the border, the oak grain shining through the gold coloured frieze ~ with classical 'Egg & Dart' carving to outer edge ~

With a rebate (to fit a picture) of 24 & 1/4" by 11 & 1/2" (Internal) ~
Or, in centimetres 61.5cm by 29.5cm ~
Sight size is 23 & 3/4" by 11" ~

... dating at a guess to around 1910 this is a fabulous antique oak frame, a classic Edwardian oak frame design, excellent quality throughout, super-sturdy with ultra-solid corner joints ~ we have a delightful border which is carved with a classic & iconic 'Egg and Dart' motif, referred to also as egg-and-anchor, egg-and-star (the egg symbolising 'life' & 'birth') ~

... the border frieze is a little different with this frame as it has been entirely gilded and I suspect painted with gold paint ~ I'm not sure if this was the original design I suspect it has been painted at a later date although this might also have been done at inception, the patina I feel is as old as the frame itself ~ it was quite fashionable to gild items such as this, the very definition of gilding is 'to make things appear gold' & as other gilt frames were popular in times when candlelight was the only light source, gilded frames reflected candlelight out into the room & onto a painting & so many items ended up being painted a bright gold colour, this gold finish has faded a tad over the years but still retains a charming colour & patina & despite the fact that this frame has this gold colouration we still have
a wonderfully strong oak grain coming through, after the artist George Frederick Watts may have been the stimulus behind this frame gilding fashion (see Google 'Watts-frame' the frame blog) Watts frames were applied with gilding directly onto the oak, something Watts was inspired to do after a trip to Italy ~

... Frames such as these are often referred to (mainly in the U.S.) as being 'Quarter-Sawn' OR 'Mission' due to the almost perfectly matching grain pattern in the Oak ~
... entirely constructed & mitred by hand this is a beautiful early 20th Century Oak frame with a real sense of Arts & Crafts style ~

The Edwardians & Victorians were passionate about using frames such as these to show off a photo of a family member sporting their Sunday best, it will also suit a quality antique gravure print or classical litho ~

... this frame can be used either in a Portrait OR Landscape fashion &
will suit an exceptional picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one; it is certainly, a frame to grace any wall ~

Condition

In Very good condition for its age, the main thing to mention here is that we think it has been painted with gold paint which may or may not be to your taste, as mentioned above this was a popular pastime in the Victorian/Edwardian era & I think this colourisation, if you will, really adds another dimension to this frame; together with the odd age commensurate minor ding here & there but in truth nothing particularly noteworthy ~ Age commensurate wear ~ With NO major damages OR losses ~

Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the excellent antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...
