He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past.

Here we offer a stated first American edition of the classic novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell, published by Harcourt, Brace, and Company, New York, in 1949. The book comes complete with its original first-form dust jacket: the rare red variant. This title is a rare example of a book club edition that bore a first-edition statement, which is why it also bears a Book-of-the-Month Club (BOMC) divot in the lower right corner of the rear board and why the jacket has no price. In addition, included with the book is its original BOMC insert, consisting of a review of the book by Henry Seidel Canby; and a modern copy of the original New Yorker review by Lionel Trilling. Columbia's Radcliffe Publishing School has listed 1984 as #3 on its list of the 20th century's greatest books.

Boards have minor soiling and edgewear (please see pics.) Intact endpages bear a small inscription.  Very tight and square binding, very clean, bright and crisp text.  314 pages, measures approximately 8.25 x 5.5-inches.  Dust jacket comes wrapped securely in its own ph-neutral mylar sleeve and ready to slip into your collection.

This very-well-preserved iconic first will make a wonderful addition to your collection or a very thoughtful gift.
