Victorian Earthenware Staffordshire Figurines C 1880 Blue + White Nodding Heads.
There are two figurines.
A male wearing spectacles and drinking a beer
No nibbles around the neck, where the nodding head has been withdrawn and replaced. Nibbles here are very common with these figures. This figurine is clear.
The width is 2.5” and the depth is 2.5”
The second male in classic Mid Victorian dress is the same dimensions as the first figure.
this does have some minor nibbles around the neck. see photos. There is also a glazed nibble near its foot. Caused during the firing process
Each has a metal pin, upon which the heads will nod
These figurines are frequently unmarked by the pottery manufacturer as they were often from smaller factories in Staffordshire and mass produced, for the evolving middle classes.
Made from earthenware with blue tinged lead glaze.
They were produced for mantle pieces and shelves, consequently they are only decorated front and side.
Total weight 610 g
Good clean condition.
The number painted internally is the artist who decorated each piece. They could then be paid according to the total they decorated.
A fascinating insight into Victorian family life. Will have produced many hours of amusement.
