Large Antique Greek Orthodox Icon Triptych 18th Century Greece

Authentic antique, Large 18th century, Greek orthodox icon triptych, finely hand painted on wood panels. The center wooden panel with niche carved as a raised arch, within, an image of the crowned Mother of God (Theotokos), flanked by the Greek script.

Virgin crowned and nimbate, in a richly embroidered veil, supports a tiny, rather adult-looking Christ child on one hand, dressed in elaborate gown, holds in the right hand a “globus cruciger”.

The two upper rows of the wings are painted with selected saints.

The left lower row is painted with St George slaying the Dragon.

Saint George (Greek: Γεώργιος, translit. Geṓrgios, Latin: Georgius; died 23 April 303), also George of Lydda, was a Christian who is venerated as a saint in Christianity. According to tradition he was a soldier in the Roman army. Saint George was a soldier of Cappadocian Greek origin and member of the Praetorian Guard for Roman emperor Diocletian, who was sentenced to death for refusing to recant his Christian faith. He became one of the most venerated saints and megalomartyrs in Christianity, and he has been especially venerated as a military saint since the Crusades. He is respected by Christians, Druze, as well as some Muslims as a martyr of monotheistic faith.

Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki was a soldier who lived in the early 4th century. He was the son of a high-ranking soldier in the Greek army. As a young man he refused to convert to Paganism and he is known for the miracles he performed on the battlefield, saving Greece from the Bulgarian King Kalojan.

CONDITION: Showing its age to be of 200 years, with some age wear overall, the paint surface distressed as well as wear and craquelure overall with age and use, with dark patina. Free of repaint and repairs.
