2019 10 oz Silver Allegories Germania & Britannia BU

The Allegories of Germania Mint introduce a very intriguing collection of the legendary female personifications of prominent historical lands and nations. In each example Lady Germania meets in symbolic circumstances with her counterpart representing another nation.

Brave, Powerful Feminine Touch

Allegories raise the question as to why many ancient lands and nations, (particularly in the West), have both feminine names and female personifications as their legendary guardians. Perhaps, this could be explained in the allegorical sense of identifying the "homeland" with the actual home and family in which they were raised under maternal care and protection.

As the mint stated it, "Treating the country as a metaphor of home and family, nations have always identified their countries with maternal protection, which provided them with a sense of security and community. Wishing to pay a tribute to them, we created a series of coins called 'The Allegories', with which we want to celebrate the extraordinary figures of 'mothers of nations', that for centuries have encouraged people in the hardest moments of human history."

It is out of this sense that the Allegories of Germania Mint were born. This series continues to be quite fascinating. And this 2019 10 oz Silver Allegories Germania & Britannia BU is a beautifully striking example!

Britannia & Germania

The obverse portrays a wonderfully stunning representation of two powerful guardians. Although Britannia and Germania are never separated from their weapons, they have chosen to relax their vigilance as they meet together on common ground. Their shields are lowered, while Britannia's trident rests loosely in her right arm, and Germania has secured her sword in the scabbard at her waist. This day, Germania reaches out to Britannia in peace. Britannia appears thoughtful, with the strength of her maritime rule over the seas represented by the trident at her side. Two powerful, historical lands represented by two beautifully strong and fully-capable female guardians. The Allegory is rich with symbolism.

The background is filled with a distinctive guilloche pattern that really makes Germania prominently stand out. Inscriptions "ALLEGORIES . 10 OZ . 999.9 FINE SILVER." are displayed within a narrow band encircling the rim. An attractive texture fills the band.

Interpretive Germania Coat of Arms

The reverse displays Germania Mint's interpretation of what would best represent the moral principles and noble values of the historical land of Germania. Germania, as such, never became a country with its own coat of arms. The design is both highly representative of these values, and absolutely gorgeous!

Quoting from the Mint's own descriptive text, "The crowned shield has been divided into four parts, from which each has a traditional meaning, precisely defined by heraldry. In the top left corner of the crest there is the Germania Mint's Bicephalous eagle ‑ a Roman mythology symbol associated with Janus, the god of all origins, guardian of doors, gates, passages and bridges, the patron of contracts and alliances. Heads facing the opposite symbolize the past and the future.

Right upper corner is decorated with a check pattern that refers to wisdom and prudence ‑ every good sovereign should be distinguished by these character traits. On the left bottom corner of the shield there are three flowers on a gold ribbon. They hide three values determining a strong and independent nation ‑ unity, integrity and freedom. On the right bottom corner of the crest a wild boar appears ‑ a very popular and respectful animal in Roman Empire, which is a symbol of mightiness and power." A fine beaded-border tightly encircles the rim, and the background has a very nicely-textured pattern. Inscriptions include "GERMANIA . 2019 . 50 MARK."

The Allegories release in four sizes, 1oz, 2oz, 5oz, and 10oz. Intriguingly, each size shares the same diameter of 38.61 mm. This, of course, results in each considerably increasing in thickness.
