Being offered on this auction is
Three Wise Monkeys (Drei Afen)
figurine made by Karlsruhe Majolika,
Germany. This is ceramic
interpretation of old Japanese pictorial maxim – “See No Evil, Hear No
Evil, Speak No Evil”. Sometime this group is called “Three Mystic Apes”.
German sculptor and ceramist Max Heinze (1883 -
1966) designed this figurine in c. 1911. This is Jugendstil
/ Art Nouveau style. Born in Sonnenberg, Turingia, he worked for Karlsruhe
manufacture since 1910 until about 1958, and was one of their most
legendary ceramic artists. He made a name when he designed a copy of
fountain in Ettinger (Ettinger
Narrenbrunner). He also designed fabulous items
featuring putti (angels). Figure on this auction
is executed in terracotta clay and glazed off white crackled leaving details
of monkeys in brown. Such crackled style was sort of Karlsruhe's knowhow. Genuine texture of ceramics beautifully resembles details of their
bodies. Looks splendid. This is Karlsruhe Majolika form 5672. Figurine is marked with standard Karlsruhe Majolika mark
engraved on the backside. Other marking is form number on the backside.
Figurine measures about 4” x 2 ¼” and
stands 4” tall. Condition is very good with no cracks or chips found. Colors are
bright and vibrant. Marking on the backside is not too easy to see; it is sort
of covered by glaze. Please take a look at the pictures to find out more about
