A SUPERB LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH OAK PORTRAIT PICTURE FRAME ~
... a fabulous large & distinctive frame with a wonderful wide Oak border, the inner part of which takes the form of an oval which is adorned by the most splendid gilt gesso garland of foliate trails with a raised central acanthus cartouche, incredibly the gesso appears to be 100% complete with no major losses & some beautiful shell cartouche flourishes lower down, with handsome grooved edgings & a glorious Oak grain & patina throughout ~ a super-solid mount with a fantastic oak grain & patina ~
Measuring approximately 23" by 19" (External) ~

... dating at a guess to the 1920s this is a superb oak frame, typically French in design it has a fabulous wide Oak frieze which is wonderfully jointed & within this, an amazing gesso central section designed to envelop the image, no doubt a photographic portrait of a happy couple ~ it's an exceptional design, the light & dark contrast in the gilt gesso wonderful & is entirely original, just stunning & actually amazing that it is in such good original condition, the grain in the wide frieze is super-straight & matches seamlessly at the corners, we also have pleasing grooved sections at the sides, such an elegant mount ~ you only find frames like this in France ~
... the whole thing has an amazingly tactile patina, this is an exceptionally well-made frame, it's a frame that just feels great to handle & to hold ~ entirely constructed by hand it's also a frame with a wonderful feeling of hand-built Arts & Crafts style ~
... this frame will suit a special picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one; it is certainly a frame to grace any wall ~

Condition
In Very good condition for its age, with a couple of small worm-holes that is complete & I always treat anyway as a matter of course, the back is a little bit scruffy there are several examples of old wallpaper if you are a textile fan but then again you will know none of this is seen once the frame is hung; together with the odd age commensurate minor ding here & there but in truth nothing particularly noteworthy ~ Age commensurate wear ~ With NO major damages OR losses ~
Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the excellent antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...

Finding the frames is the tricky bit, I wear a lot of tyre tread & shoe leather on my travels & I reject 99% of the frames that I see based on design OR condition, not to mention price ~ Many of the 'high-end' Interiors glossy magazines World of Interiors / Architectural Digest / Elle Decoration et al, have been promoting antique frame ‘feature-walls’ for many years now has been a popular decorator's trend, after all, "Without the right frame, Art is lost" ~

*** Each frame has been carefully stripped down of its backing & cleaned using professional materials - The back of the frame is then meticulously tidied of any loose impediments, nails, splinters, dust, glass OR any other abrasions ~ Where necessary, the border is then treated with a high-quality bees-wax and buffed vigorously, giving the wood a fresh lustre and sheen leaving you the customer with what is effectively a moderately refurbished frame ~ Some frames, depending on size, may be available with old glass & a backing so please enquire about this before we ship ~
