Description

A fabulously beautiful antique Victorian 15k gold, hair, enamel and crystal acorns mourning pendant, dating to circa 1880.

This gorgeous Victorian Etruscan revival memento mori mourning pendant has a lot going on and is full of symbolism-the acorn represents strength, luck and prosperity but also youth and innocence as does the white enamel to the reverse implying this is most likely a memento mori for a young person. Created in solid 15k rose gold which has been 'bloomed' (solid gold pieces gilded in high carat yellow gold which was in high fashion between 1870 and 1890) to create an ultra rich, glowing and gleaming finish the circular pendant has a fabulous raised floating 3D scene of gold acorns and oak leaves where every surface has been engraved, carved and textured in unbelievably realistic details, the acorns surrounded by a wide Etruscan revival decorated curving frame with an eight point star created with tiny gold wire circles, the frame with a lovely twisted rope border. The reverse of the pendant has an elaborate hairwork scene in the form of a bouquet of flowers with twisted gold wire and pearl decorations set against snow white enamel and all protected by its original bevel edged crystal protective front, the pendant with an attached bail and further secondary bail above. The pendant is unmarked and tests for 15k gold.

The pendant measures approximately 33mm (1 5/16 inch) across and is about 12mm (15/32 inch) deep. The pendant weighs approximately 11.7 grams.

The pendant is in general very good condition. The pendant looks to have had a now removed pin setting on the reverse. Some of the gold wire and pearl decoration are loose under the crystal. The front of the pendant including the acorn display are in excellent condition.

TERMS OF SALE & RETURNS

We make great efforts to honestly and accurately describe each item we list. We back this up with many photographs, all with a close-up zoom option for detailed inspection. Due to the majority of our items being antique/vintage and often unique it can be difficult to determine age and as such all our items are sold 'as is'. However, if we are not certain about the age of an item we will either not mention an age or say the item is being sold as a later or modern piece and then leave it up to more experienced buyers to determine the exact age. Items are not returnable if it was not of the age/value you were hoping it to be with no exceptions. If we place a date on an item we guarantee it to be of that period or earlier. If you require further pictures or more information about an item, please let us know prior to bidding or purchase. Items cannot be returned for any condition issues either shown in the pictures or mentioned in the listing. As many items we sell are one hundred years or older we will not accept returns for wear consistent with the item's age. Any item mentioned as sold 'as is' in the listing will not be eligible for any form of return or refund. If it is determined an item is eligible for a return, the item must be shipped back within 48 hours, insured and tracked. A restocking fee may apply.
