This is a Grand Tour Souvenir from what was then the
exciting new discovery of Pompeii. It is a well-made bronze copy of a double
wick lamp found in the Archaeological Museum of Naples Italy. The
lamp is decorated with leaf and floral decorations and capped with a wonderful
Owl figure. It has been mounted on a
marble base inscribed “IO SONO UNA LAMPADA CH'ARDE, SOAVE!” Or, “I am a lamp that burns, So Let’s Go!”.
This is a large piece that is 9.5” wide x 6” deep x 5’5”
tall. It is cast in massive bronze
weighs a hefty four pounds. The lamp
shows its age in wear but does not seem to have any real defects. I am guessing this may have been electrified
at one time but is so it was removed before I obtained it. My items are sold as found and information
about the provenance varies greatly.
