Outstanding 1925 etching, "Heavy Surf at Monhegan" by listed Monhegan, Maine and Boston artist Sears Gallagher (1869-1955). The following biography is from White Mountain Art:

Sears Gallagher was born in Boston, MA in 1869. He descended from a long line of Pilgrim ancestors, including Governor William Bradford.

He studied with S.P.R. Triscott and Tomasso Juglaris in the 1880s. He was known for both his etchings and his watercolors.

He created his first etching in 1888. In 1911, he produced a series of Boston scenes which launched his fame as a master etcher. He was an early member of the artists colony on Monhegan Island where, beginning around 1892, he summered for more than 50 years. He is also known for his autumnal watercolors of New Hampshire’s White Mountains, staying in the fall in Jackson, NH.

He was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists. He exhibited at the Boston Art Club, the Paris Salon, the Boston City Club, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He was represented by Doll & Richards Gallery  in Boston from 1915-on.

This relatively rare 1925 etching was done when Gallagher was an active member of the Monhegan artist's colony. The print was included in the 16th Anniversary portfolio of Presentation Prints by the Chicago Society of Etchers and impressions of this print are in the Monhegan Museum, the Farnsworth Museum, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Wichita Art Museum, among others. The etching measures 6" x 9" (image size).
