It was built in Philadelphia by the company “William Cramp & Sons”.  Officially, it was laid down in July 17, 1899 (in the Julian calendar), launched in October 10, 1900, and put into service in December 1901. In April 30, 1902, it left the American shore and led to Russia, keeping a 10-knot speed. In June 24, it participated in Revel in the traditional parade, dedicated to the meeting of the Russian and German emperors. In October 31, “Retvizan” led the squadron to Port Arthur. It was attacked at its left side with a torpedo by the torpedo-boat "Shirakumo” at night of the 27th January. In a moment, the water fulfilled the room of underwater torpedo-launching tubes. It appeared impossible to come along the fairway: the battleship touched the ground with its bow, its stern was turned round and the ship blocked the half of the way, leading to the harbour. “Retvizan” could not be refloated and it was decided to include it into the system of the raid defence as a floating fort. It was successfully refloated only in February 24. The repair was dragged for four months. In July 28, the battleship took part in the fight, which went down into history books as “Fight in the Yellow Sea”. In November 23, it appeared under the fire in the harbour and took the ground with a left side lurch. In September 22, 1905, it was refloated by the Japanese and renamed into “Hizen”.
