Five Classic U.S. Buffalo Nickels

ON OFFER: Five randomly selected classic U.S. Buffalo Nickels in a drawstring gift pouch.

The nickels are of random years and of above average circulated (used) conditions with dates and clear legends; normal wear on high points as expected for this type and grade. No big dings or dogs. The lot arrives in a 2"x3" drawstring gift pouch made of long-lasting velveteen, making it a perfect keepsake.

Designed by American sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo nickel was first struck 110 years ago in 1913 to succeed the Liberty Head series of 1883. Although widely popular with the public, it was a problematic piece to mint, and the Treasury Department happily replaced it with the now iconic first pattern type Jefferson nickel in 1938.

Minted in Philadelphia (no mark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S), approximately 1.1 billion coins were produced over the course of the design's 25-year run, which is a relatively low number by modern standards considering that there were over 2 billion Jefferson nickels produced in 1964, alone. This dearth of Buffalos was due to the dual constraints of WWI, and the Great Depression. In the first instance there was no spare nickel in the country for more coins, and in the second, the country couldn't use any more spare nickel coins.

Mints and dates will vary, but the Quality will not! Makes a nice gift for the collector, student, educator, or history buff in your life!
