The Coastwise Navigator

Warwick M. Tompkins
1947 -- NYC: Dodd, Mead, & Co.

The preface of the first edition of "The Coastwise Navigator" says of author Tompkins: "Captain Tompkins is well equipped to instruct in the art of getting from here to there, and it is hoped that the reader will find it unnecessary to search further for information until the inevitable time when he attains the desire to go 'off soundings.'"

The more common term for Coastwise Navigator is simply "Pilot" -- these are the folks who are intimately familiar with how to handle a boat or ship in shallow water, fighting currents, shoals, waves, and navigating by lighthouse, buoy, cliff face, and even the color of the water. This lovely book takes you back before the electronic age -- when a captain had to navigate by eye, ear, and brain. It's full of great illustrations and engravings. Fun to look at whether or not the sea is your home away from home.
