Antique Cased Coffee Spoon Set

Dimensions are approximately:

 Spoon length: 10cms (4" ins)
Box diameter: 19.5cms (7 5/8" ins) x 14cms (5 1/2" ins)

This Victorian era cased coffee spoon set was produced by
English silversmiths Thomas Bradbury & Sons circa 1897.
The six sterling silver spoons and matching sugar tongs are of excellent quality and the cast Apostles have good detail, unlike sets of Apostle spoons mass produced later in the 20th century.

The six spoons and tongs each depict the same Apostle with a nimbus (halo) engraved with Saint Esprit, the Dove of the Holy Ghost atop each one. The tongs are decorated the same on each side.  The spoon bowls are very finely engraved, not sure if it is initials, a crest or just a motif... The stems have a detailed twist. The hallmarks are clear on all items.

Impressive set and in excellent condition for age...

As the years pass, these lovely antique items become more precious... pieces are damaged, lost or collections are broken up.  The good news for collectors is that quality pieces should not only hold their value but increase over time.

Condition:
The set is in excellent antique condition commensurate for age and use. Some wear, spot of tarnish, with minor pitting to the spoon bowls and the silver in small areas, fine scratches from use but minimal... colour and general appearance is very good.

The original case (stamped Sharman D. Neill) has split from the cover and shows some wear.

The company ceased trading in 1943.

The interior of the box is stamped with the clockmaker, diamond merchant and jeweller's name 'Sharman D. Neill', a family firm which dates back to 1802 in Belfast, Ireland.
During their heyday, Neill’s made presentation Freedom Boxes for the City Council and were jewellers by appointment to His Majesty King Edward VII.
