Description

A SUPERB ANTIQUE VICTORIAN FRENCH GILT PICTURE FRAME ~

... I picked this frame up in France recently, it is one of a matching pair, it's a beautiful high-quality frame with a sensational lemon-gilt colour, the gilding of which I believe to be the original, a wonderful stocky frame with a fabulous gilt tone ~ I believe it to be late-19th Century, however, I am NO expert so please take in ALL of the photos for you own benefit ~

Measuring approximately 19 & 1/4" by 16 & 3/4" (External) ~
With a rebate (to fit a picture) of 14 & 5/8" by 12 & 1/4" (Internal) ~
Or, in centimetres 37cm by 31cm ~
Sight size is 14 & 1/8" by 11 & 5/8" ~

... this is a fantastic old frame with bags of style & charm it dates at a guess to around 1880, it's a classic Victorian or Napolean III design with a fabulous bevelled & ribbed frieze, there is also a matching gilt slip which is original to the frame, there is also a wonderful shallow groove at the side of the frame ~

... at the corners of the frame, we can just see the original frame-makers nails making the corners of this frame rock solid making this a wonderful frame just to handle & hold ~

... it is a deep frame of 2" in depth & we such a fabulous gilt colour which l I believe to be original, although now slightly faded, this zingy gilt colourisation gives this frame a real sense of 'faded glory' ~

... the border colour has faded slightly over time but on the face of the frame & in the grooves of the main frieze you get so many variations of tone & still get an incredible sense of the original gold colour & it is just superb quality, it's only at the very back sides of the frame that the gilding is pretty much rubbed away, I also don't think that this will matter too much once the frame is hung & this beautiful colourisation gives this frame a real sense of 'faded glory' ~

... I think that often quality antique frames such as this have a fabulous, naive folk-art appeal, this mount dazzles such is the contrast between brighter gilt sections & the burnished deeper gilt tones & naturally, there is a delightful contrast here between the brighter gilt sections & the darker rippled recesses ~

...
in Georgian & Victorian times frames were gilded so that they reflected candlelight into a room & also onto a painting & this pretty frame simply glows wondrously~

... entirely built by hand from a solid pine carcass this is a super-stylish frame that oozes period sophistication as well as immense
 character & charm ~

This frame will suit an exceptional picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one; it is certainly a frame to grace any wall, and it would also make a pretty fantastic mirror ~
Thank you for looking ~
If you have any questions please ask ~

In Very good condition for its great age, when I bought the frame it was a little wormy but as I do with ALL of my wormy frames I treated it with some professional solution & any worm is now complete (long since gone) it is showing some signs of wear but these are happily confined to the sides of the frame, so there's quite a build-up of dust to the top rail (see photo 13) that one would naturally associate with a frame of such age; together the odd age commensurate minor ding here & there but in truth nothing particularly noteworthy & certainly nothing to detract ~ Age commensurate wear ~ Super solid corner joints ~ With NO major  damages OR losses ~

... one of several antique gilt frames I currently have on eBay ~

Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the very good antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...
