A SUPERB ANTIQUE FRENCH OVAL ART NOUVEAU PICTURE FRAME ~
... a fabulously ornate oval frame with an incredible organic Art Nouveau pattern to wide border & a splendid faux tortoise-shell bevelled gully frieze & matching 'Lamb's Tongue' motif to sight edge with ebonised edging ~

Measuring approximately 19" by 15 & 3/4" (External) ~
With a rebate size (to fit a picture) of 14" by 11" (Internal) ~
Or, in centimetres 35.5cm by 28cm ~
Sight size is 13 & 1/4" by 10 & 1/4" ~
... a stunning antique picture frame dating at a guess to the early 1900s but may well be a bit older ~ I bought it in Southern France a few years ago at the large yearly fair at the chateau at Chambord & have been enjoying it ever since, I was meaning to convert it to a mirror & buy some of that very nice distressed plate glass that can be bought quite inexpensively, however, I've never done anything with it so have now decided it's time to move it on ~
... it's a fabulous super-solid frame, very much in the French Art Nouveau style with a beautiful stylised border pattern of striking semi-circular decoration replete with this delightful fan-splay of foliate leaves with berries, these fabulously organic motifs are raised & are gilded rather beautifully and this gilding I believe to be the original ~
... this frame will originally have been designed to hold a notable head & shoulders portrait, the design is quite involved we have lots of different types of decoration here, it reminds me in some ways of the organic William designs, the peacock & dragon series especially ~
... this Art Nouveau ornamentation works so well with the hand-painted faux-tortoiseshell bevelled frieze, they contrast beautifully & the lamb's tongue at the sight edge is also gilded adding more interest, the sides of the frame are ebonised or more probably painted black, as was the fashion & all of these sumptuous design facets contrast & combine perfectly to make this a stunning ornate picture frame with bags of French flair & charm, uber-stylish, très Gallic, très opulent!
... it is quite a deep frame with a depth of over an inch so it's an incredibly solid frame, the joint work is very clever here with four separate wooden sections that are pieced together to make the whole, this is patently the work of a master carpenter & framer ~
Sight size is 13 & 1/4" by 10 & 1/4" ~

In Very good condition with no losses that I can see, amazing considering the great age, perhaps the odd very minor crack maybe at the signs or in the raised gesso like a craqueleur but nothing in particular & certainly nothing to detract ~ Age commensurate wear ~ Super solid joints ~ With NO major losses OR damages ~ Please take in ALL of the photos ~
