A SUPERB & UNUSUAL FRENCH ANTIQUE CLOCK FACE SURROUND PICTURE FRAME ~
... a fabulous ornate mount with brass circular aperture & highly decorative mother-of-pearl style inlay foliate trails, tulip-type flowers ~

Measuring approximately 23 & 5/8" by 17 & 3/4" (External) ~
With a Rebate size of 10" by 10" (Internal) ~
Or, in cms 25.5cm by 25.5cm ~
And a Sight size of 9 & 3/8" by 9 & 3/8" ~

... dating at a guess to the late 1800s but may well be much older this is a superb antique French oval picture frame, okay, so it was once a beautiful, tall Grandfather clock, chiming away in an elegant bourgeois maître de maison, however, the clock mechanism is long gone & what we are left with is this beautiful decorative housing, these lovely clock face frames are actually quite desirable in France, you often see them just like this for sale at the major provincial brocantes & fairs & they are not cheap ~
~ so, I guess you have to use your imagination to use a piece like this, thankfully many of my clients have super imaginations, so this frame can be used as a stand alone piece OR can be used as a frame, it has a circular aperture, no rebate as such but I have even used pieces like this to house a sculpture or a ceramic piece ~
... we have an ebonised outer which is a wonderful soft ovoid shape, within this is the most loverly mother-of-pearl (I am not an expert on Mother-of-pearl this may or may not be the real thing, please take in ALL of the photos for your own benefit) foliate trail of various flowers, whole garlands adorn the top & bottom & tulip shapes interlink at the sides, the little pieces catch the light & shine as you tilt the frame from side to side & there is a metal zig-zag inlay here too, very finely rippled which runs like fine thin arabesque trails & links each flower to another as they climb the sides of the frame, & all of this is finished off with the circular brass sight creating a lovely visual contrast, I haven't cleaned the brass centre ring, in truth I never know whether or not to but I think it will bring another grandiose element to this frame if cleaned witha little Autosol!
... together all these three different types of material that make up the decoration all combine to make a stunningly ornate picture frame with bags of French flair & charm, uber-stylish, très Gallic, très opulent!
This frame will suit a certain picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one, it would also make a fabulous mirror; it is certainly a frame that will grace any wall ~

Condition
In Good condition; there is a bit of the ebonised material missing from the front of the frame (see photo 8) at the top left perhaps 1 & 1/4" in length & naturally there are some of the little mother-of-pearl pieces that have been lost over the years, happily I would say that around 95%, if not more, is still entirely intact, there is a rather odd nail jutting out that I have decided just to leave alone, obviously part of the gift of the maker & I think may be attached to the brass circle but one must be aware of it as it is a little sharp, some of the ebonised sections have shrunk (see photo 18) or worn a tad but this is just age-commensurate wear, there was some ancient worm at the back but long gone &! I always treat anyway so we are all good on that front; together with the odd minor age commensurate ding to the border, but in truth nothing particularly noteworthy ~ Super strong corners ~ Age commensurate wear ~ With NO major damages OR losses ~ Please take in ALL of the photos ~
