This beautiful vase is carved from soapstone and then the background is dyed with natural dyes, the details are then added and finally it is polished until gleaming using carver's wax.

This particular vase depicts 2 giraffes on one side, 2 zebra on the opposite side and the other 2 sides are both painted with a typical African tree

Soapstone is a natural rock found in the village of Tabaka near Kisii, Kenya.

Most of the villagers make their living from these sculptures.

Polishing with wax polish helps to slow down the natural fading of the dyes used.
