Spanish Moss - Bird’s Nest - Old man’s Beard

Thanks for viewing my listing.

We are a group of small Orchid Enthusiasts who enjoy growing Native Australian Orchids. We have sourced our stock over the years from Orchid Leaders and have enjoyed growing our stock to a tiny commercial quantity.

We use Seasol religiously, Low & slow.. We have given this Spanish Moss the best environment to grow through trial and error.

Please view our Tips and Tricks section to get the most out of your new Air Plant.

Tip: To get the most out of your growing experience we recommend you order over 45gram, this clump will be much happier and the growth rate will increase dramatically. You will have a sizeable growth by the following year and it will be ready to be distributed to other trees/orchids or for the birds to use for nesting.

Enjoy Growing.

Please see below for what your order amount will look like exactly, we want everyone to be happy so if you have any questions or something went wrong we are happy to rectify any problems, we are very reasonable, some would say friendly :)

Plant details

This ‘air plant’ occurs naturally from Argentina to the southern United States, including the Louisiana bayous. It is not a moss at all, but a member of the pineapple family (Bromeliaceae), which is often found hanging on the branches of trees. It looks similar to Usnea, an unrelated lichen which also grows on tree branches, and this is reflected in the species name ‘usneoides’.

Common name: Spanish moss, Old man’s whiskers

Botanic name: Tillandsia usneoides

Description: A perennial, mosslike epiphyte. It has no roots, and hangs in long grey strands from the trunks and branches of host trees. The slender stems are covered in silvery white scales which absorb moisture and nutrients from the air. Inconspicuous pale green or blue flowers appear in summer and are fragrant at night.

Best climate: All areas of Australia, except for Hobart and the mountains. It will grow in cold climates in a heated glasshouse or conservatory.

Growth Tips!

Spanish moss grows in full sun to part shade. It is sensitive to frost and air pollution.

It is recommended to be fed with liquid fertilizer - but it needs to be diluted like a half-strength of what is recommended for orchids.

  • in spring through summer. Just spray it on monthly to help keep plants healthy and growing. Like all plants, water should be distilled, rain water is always our goto!

We recommend that you monitor your plant. A thorough soaking, like dunking in a pond or a bucket, will sufficiently fill the plant leaves.

Like most orchids, Spanish Moss will need protection from frost.

They also love air movement around them and humidity. They love to be grown outdoors, ideally in dappled light.

If you're in a hot, dry spot they need to be watered regularly over summer.
