19th Century Silver &
Mother of Pearl Folding Lorgnette Spectacles – C. 1865
Antique, Victorian Unmarked
Silver & Mother of Pearl Lorgnette Spectacles. Folding Lorgnette housed within a MoP
handle, the double hinged lenses folding in on themselves and then retract back
into the case/handle. The lenses are magnified; however, these could be altered
to a prescription lens or plain glass. No makers mark. Invented by Englishman
George Adams, the lorgnette was usually used as a piece of jewellery, rather
than to enhance vision. Society ladies preferred them to spectacles, especially
at parties or the opera (becoming the model for today's opera glasses).
Condition: Excellent Antique Condition. Silver polishes to a high
sheen, showing slight oxidation & cleaner buildup, with light age related
surface scratching, dings & wear. Hinges work well. Lenses overall in good
order. No case. High resolution images are part of the condition report, please
view closely.
