Cley next the Sea Windmill and port: an original painting in oil on board by the Norfolk artist Hubert Shipp (1935 to 2021).  It depicts the well known windmill at Cley-next-the-Sea, with the port and barge or wherry.  The painting measures 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches, and the frame 8.5 inches by 10.5 inches.

I bought this picture from Hubert (Henry) Edward Shipp at an exhibition in Bungay, Suffolk - probably in the late 1980's or early 1990's.  He was little known outside the area, but was an exceptional talent, executing landscape and ornithological paintings in astonishing detail.  To me his works are folk-art.  They also share qualities with those Seurat and Signac - the detail often making use of pointallism, as can be seen in this example in the rendering of the flintwork walling and foreground.  At the same time the figure looks like he's straight out of a Bruegel.  It bears Hubert Shipp's monogram - a stylised "HS" in the lower right.

Hubert was born at Loddon, Norfolk, and died in 2021 at Bungay.  I wish I knew little more about him.

His ornithological subjects are perfect - up there with the very best illustrators - and vastly under-valued.

I offer old Southwold, wider East Anglian art, quirky antiques, and more general interesting pieces.  The artworks are mainly old plus a few newer local pictures, and associated subjects; both celebrated and lesser artists. The antiques lean towards quirky, folk-art, and "below stairs" country house or cottage pieces – and simply unusual pieces that catch my eye.  They include furniture, metalwork, treen etc. Many sea-related items will deliver a 10% donation to the RNLI.

All dimensions stated are in inches, and the prices include packing and shipping within the UK mainland.  I can ship overseas - just let me know where you are and I'll get a quote.

N.B. I pack and ship pictures using professional custom-made wooden (not card-board) boxes - these take me a little time to prepare dependent on demand, but I'll do my utmost to meet your delivery requirements.
