A LOVELY LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH GILT & GESSO PICTURE FRAME ~ 
... a wonderful ornate oval Gallic mount with fabulous stylised raised foliate gesso sections ~

 
Measuring approximately 18" by 14" (External) ~
With a rebate size (to fit a picture) of 15 & 7/8" by 11 & 7/8" (Interior) ~
Or, in centimetres 40.5cm by 30.5cm ~
Sight size is 15 & 1/4" by 11 & 1/4" ~

... dating at a guess to the 1920s this is a lovely antique oval picture frame ~ I bought it this year in France at the yearly country Brocante at Marsac & I noticed this time that these exquisite French frames are getting quite hard to find especially in good condition ~

... this one not only is in very good condition, with just one minor bash to an edge (see below) it is also as pretty as a picture, very much in the French Empire meets Art Deco style, so we have a gilt, raised outer border with some fabulous raised foliate gesso detail sections, with lovely sculptural gesso, of raised fruit & leaves, the inner band or frieze has a delightful mottled pattern & contrasts beautifully with the bold fruit motifs ~

... typically French & opulent in style, I imagine that this frame was originally designed to hold a head & shoulders photo if not a whole body length portrait, and the gilding is glorious & I believe it to be the original ~

... entirely built by hand, it's quite a solid frame, and the joint work is very clever indeed, separate curved wooden sections are pieced together here, this is patently the work of a master framer ~ 

... the understated gilt banding together with the stylish foliate flourishes & the amazing gilt tone ~ together all these different types of decorative features combine to make a stunningly ornate picture frame with bags of French flair & charm, uber-stylish, très Gallic, très opulent!

This frame will suit a certain picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one, it would also make a fabulous mirror; it is certainly a frame that will grace any wall ~

Condition
In Very good condition ~ one small gilt loss where there has been a slight bash at some time in the past to the edge (see photo 6) roughly 1.5cm in length, it's nothing really & all part of the character of this ancient frame I mention just for honesty, together with the odd age-commensurate ding & perhaps small gilding loss here & there but in truth, nothing particularly noteworthy and certainly nothing to detract ~ Age-commensurate wear ~ Super solid joints ~ With NO major losses OR damages ~ Please take in ALL of the photos ~
 
 Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the very good antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...

** All of our antique frames will  have some form of age commensurate wear, most of our frames are not reproductions & so there will be slight imperfections e.g., the odd ding OR light scratch etc, after all, this is the very essence of owning an antique frame ~ Please, always refer to the detailed photos, they are an accurate reflection of the antique condition ~
 
*** Each frame has been carefully stripped down of its backing & cleaned using professional materials - The back of the frame is then meticulously tidied of any loose impediments, nails, splinters, dust, glass OR any other abrasions ~ Where necessary, the border is then treated with a high-quality bees-wax and buffed vigorously, giving the wood a fresh lustre and sheen leaving you the customer with what is effectively a moderately refurbished frame ~ Some frames, depending on size, may be available with old glass & a backing so please enquire about this before we ship ~
