This is one of the nicest tiles from the Shakespeare series designed by the great Arts and Crafts designer John Moyr Smith. It was the second series of designs he did for Minton's and one of his most popular, being widely used in fireplaces, furniture etc.  It is made by the dust pressed method and transfer printed with the design - in this case in a simple sepia colour. On the back of the tile are the embossed marks for Minton's China Works, Stoke on Trent.

The subject of this tile is Macbeth, Act 3 Scene 4, in which Banquo's ghost appears to Macbeth.

John Moyr Smith (1839 – 1912) was born in Scotland and trained as an architect, also attending the Glasgow School of Art.  His first work was as an architect but he moved more towards design, working for a while with Christopher Dresser and writing works on design, as well as having an important influence on the Arts and Crafts movement.  He is best known for his designs for tiles for Mintons.

We have others of the tiles in this series for sale.
