Handsome original 1889 antique color lithographed map of the Arizona and New Mexico Territories, published more than 134 years ago.

  • The image area measures 23 x 29 cm [9" x 11½"] and there is good detail on old county configurations and railroad alignments.

  • In New Mexico it shows a branch of the Santa Fe Railroad to Silver City, which had opened shortly before the map was printed.

  • And in Arizona, it shows the Arizona Central Railway, which connected the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad to Prescott, the former territorial capital, from Prescott Junction, later renamed Seligman. The Gila Valley, Globe & Northern Railway, later renamed the Arizona Eastern Railway, is shown as under construction.

  • Topography is drawn in relief, and longitude is measured from Greenwich and Washington.

  • The map was engraved by E.F. Fisk and published by Hunt & Easton in The Peoples Cyclopedia of Universal Knowledge, New York, 1889.

  • On the reverse side there are population tables for each territory with county-by-county totals of white and colored residents, as well as a breakdown of native white, foreign white, and colored males of 21 years of age and over. Data is based on the 1880 federal census, with revisions in 1882.
