Antique 1860s Neo Grec Greek Key Medallion Silverplated COVERED SOUP TUREEN Dish

This impressive covered soup tureen is in very nice antique condition and features ornate acanthus lion's foot/claw legs, Greek Key and beaded banding, a medallion on one side with a soldier holding a shield next to a woman, a figural Greek or Roman helmet lid finial, and goddess head figural handles. There is also ornate engraving on both sides of the bowl, and the back has a monogram that reads something like "MCM from MGR". The style and decoration on this tureen are very reminiscent of John Wendt, though I have seen various elements of this tureen on pieces by Sheffield, Manhattan, Reed and Barton, Tiffany, and Gorham. I haven't been able to make out any maker's mark, though I included 2 collage pictures of things that may be marks. There is a small pit right in the middle of the bottom of the bowl where you would expect to see a mark, but I can't make anything out. The condition of the piece is really very good...there's a rough edge to one handle, some swirl and drip marks in the plating, utensil marks and a slight pit in the bowl, the lid doesn't sit perfectly flush all the way around, some tiny bubbles in the plating near one handle, and light wear to the plating on the high areas. There is a lot of plating wear on the top of the lid though. All damage is shown in the picture above. Also, something tiny is rattling inside the tureen when you shake it hard, though there is no way to get in there to see what it might be. The tureen measures 14" across including the handles and about 9" to the top of the finial.

In spite of any flaws, it's a unique piece that displays beautifully.

Please see all of the pictures for additional details.
