Scarce, illustrated military manual published just before the American Civil War. Includes notes on regiment formation, camp life, and arms & ammunition, along with illustrations and sample record keeping charts. Written by civil engineer Egbert Ludovicious Viele (1825-1902), while he was a captain in the Engineer Corps of the 7th New York Militia. During the Civil War, Viele would serve as a Brigadier General with the U.S. Volunteers and as military governor of Norfolk, Virginia.
