Post Civil War westward expansion period, c.1870-90. Blacksmith made, 12 ½” length made in four pieces. The curved iron shoe with two U shaped mounts to hold the wheel and a forward securing ring. Used to lock the wheels in downhill mountainous travel. The wheel was rolled on to the skid and the ring secured with a chain to the wagon frame. The wagon then could skid on the rocky road surface without rolling out of control. Rusted overall and the underside with clear scour marks from use. The only such example we have encountered and should be on public display.
