History of the Artifact

The Penny Red stamp was a postage stamp issued in the United Kingdom in 1841 as part of a postal reform. It is a follow-up to the famous Penny Black stamp, which was the world's first adhesive postage stamp. The Penny Red was so named because it featured a red design, unlike the black design of the Penny Black. The Penny Red stamp featured a portrait of Queen Victoria and was printed in various shades of red. It had the same basic design as the Penny Black, with the image of Queen Victoria and the words "POSTAGE" and "ONE PENNY" on it. Over the years, several variations and perforation types of the Penny Red were produced. It was in use from 1841 to the 1870s and played a significant role in the development of modern postal systems by prepaying postage and making mail delivery more efficient.
