History of the Artifact

After Alexander the Great's Macedonian Empire was divided, Seleucus I Nicator established the Hellenistic (culturally Greek) Seleucid Empire in 312 BC. It covered areas that are now part of modern-day Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Turkmenistan and stretched over West Asia. A significant hub of Hellenistic culture, the Seleucid Empire tolerated regional customs while giving preference to Greek language and customs. It had ongoing difficulties, such as wars with the Roman Republic, the Mauryan Empire, and Ptolemaic Egypt.

Philip I of Syria (died 83 BC) was a king of the Seleucids. He ruled Syria from 94 BCE until the Romans conquered the country in 75 BC. Philip I's early years were marked by a political conflict between his father, Antiochus I, and his uncle, Antipas XIX. After the assassination of his twin brother Seleukus VI in the year 94 BC, he became king with the support of his brother Antipas XI.
