If Alice were Alizia, and Wonderland was Mexico…. This truly magical teapot combines Tlaquepaque, fantasy , and Art Deco influences into a stunning piece that blurs the line between tabletop design and art.

The imposing, majestic ( 8 1/2”) tea or coffeepot is beautifully painted with oversize blooms and leaves that go beyond simple folk representations. The flowers, done in subdued ecrus, russets and sages are painted as individual beings, filled with character and life.

The pot is remarkably well-preserved, especially for vintage Mexican redware. I see no significant chips, cracks, flaking, crazing, staining or finish loss. The very minor imperfections I have found are documented in the photos. There is an errant line of blue glaze on the interior, which for me, adds to the humanity and charm.

The piece is unmarked. I have seen this pattern ascribed to Arias, but who knows. It is pretty darn special, whoever crafted it. As far as dating goes, one seller advertised a set that came with a receipt from 1949, so I am guessing 1940s- 50s.

The gray/blue ground has a brushy, possibly sponged on, quality , which gives it an airiness that contrasts nicely with the chunky solidity of the flowers.

This is a spectacular, unusual piece that will display beautifully solo, as part of a tea set tableau, or in concert with a varied redware collection. I was beyond excited to find it and I hope to make a lucky collector extremely happy!
