- Also known as a Hanky or Kerchief. Kerchief is the Old English word derived from French words Couvrir which means "to cover", and Chef which means "head". So a Handkerchief is a cloth in a hand.
- In the 19th century Handkerchiefs were used in the subtle art of flirtation. Ladies would drop a handkerchief in order to gain the attention of a suitor. A suitor might give a lady a hanky as a presentation of affection.
- During WWll one might give a hanky in remembrance, consolation or enduring affection during separations.
- In The Great Depression a hanky might be put in a buttonhole or belt loop as the only affordable accessory and adds a little cheer to the drab.
- Battenberg lace tape began to be available in Victorian England. Hundreds of different varieties of tapes were available for purchase for home lace making. Which saved them weeks of time when making lavish and intricate textiles.
