SO WHAT IS CHAPAN?

A chapan is a traditional Uzbek robe. In the past this was considered an exclusively male garment, but in the modern world, women have turned their attention to chapan. Outwardly, this is a simply cut robe with straight sleeves, without buttons and fasteners. However, a chapan features two straps in the chest area that can be tied . There are vertical slits on the sides of the thighs so as not to constrain movement when walking. The dressing gown is cut with an overlap, so that the chapan will protect its wearer from the piercing wind. For insulation, chapans usually come with a lining made of cotton wool or camel hair. All chapan fabric is carefully hand-sewn by Uzbek craftswomen. In Uzbekistan, chapans typically feature texts wishing the wearer well.

Chapans can be luxurious, or made for everyday life.

Luxurious or festive chapans are sewn from the most beautiful silk adras or from the chic, iridescent alo-bakhmal (Uzbek velvet); a beautiful fabric is also tastefully selected for the lining. The edges are decorated with handmade braid with silk tassels. Festive chapans are decorated with hand embroidery in gold thread and are considered especially chic. In Uzbekistan, this is a gift for the most eminent and honored guest. 👳🏼♀️🤴

Chapans for everyday life use simpler fabric - velour or cotton adras, and linings made from chintz.

Chapans have been trending in recent years - this type of fashion has seen a rebirth, particularly in Uzbekistan. It is no longer only considered an element of traditional national clothing, but also a fashionable item.

Today, chapans are increasingly popular, not only in Uzbekistan, but throughout the world. Men and women wear them as outerwear, combined with casual clothes. The best and most famous Uzbek designers create and adorn chapans: long and short, in a range of the brightest and most diverse colors. Our vintage upcycled chapans can be worn as coats or jackets out of the home, or as a luxurious dressing gown or bathrobe, to add a bohemian edge to your personal style.
