Released in 1971, the Sony ST-5130 incorporated the most advanced techniques in FM tuner technology and full utilization of the available devices.

Sensitivity, interference rejection, and other vital factors which affect the quality of a tuner are greatly determined by the characteristics of the front end. A precision 5-row varicon front end, MOS FET's and 8-element solid-state IF stage was employed in the ST-5130 to specially designed to bring out the utmost in the tuner. This achieves exceptionally high sensitivity, overload capability, image rejection, superior cross-modulation rejection, and low internal noise. It delivers clean audio output even if the unit is operated near a powerful transmitter, or receives very weak stations in distant fringe areas.

The ST-5130 weighs over 16 lbs and measures a compact 15.75"W x 6"H x 13.5"D.

Condition:

This beautiful preamp is in "Excellent" condition with minimal signs of use and nice, clean front panel! So what puts the "Y" in "Minty?" With sharp corners to the cabinet and feet, the only thing worth mentioning is just a few minor scuffs and an etched ID# on the base seen in the pics. If it weren't for these trivial things we would have had no problem calling this beauty fully "Mint!" The manual has gone missing, but no worries, it is available online or we will send you the PDF file directly on request. The factory box does have the original cardboard inserts and shows some shelf wear as seen in the pics, mostly tape residue. We are including the pictured NEW RCA Audio Cable and FM Dipole Antenna so you are ready to go! Please do inspect all the pictures thoroughly for actual condition.

Service:

On inspection, this unit worked fine with just a little scratchiness to some of the controls and a dim dial, so it went to our tech for servicing.

All the lamps were actually still working, with the exception of the AM and Stereo indicators, but they were a little dim and most likely going to fail soon, all the lamps were replaced with long-life LED's! The original white incandescents with heavy green filters were replaced with Green LED's, as the dial is only lit on both ends it is a little more subtle than the meters. All the indicators were also upgraded so you won't have to worry about them either. It's this kind of thoughtful, preventative servicing that makes it smart to buy from a company with an experienced, in-house technician!

All vintage tuners receive the following services and much more, all performed by our qualified technician:

Lid is removed & unit is inspected to determine if any attempted amateur repairs exist that need to be corrected, or substandard parts that need replacement
The exterior, all knobs & plexis are cleaned & detailed
While the front panel is removed for cleaning, all attachments are re-glued and dried out foam inserts replaced.
All switches & pots are cleaned internally with Specialist Contact Cleaner (proven superior to DeoxIT by our customers), while those with special needs receive the less aggressive DeoxIT F-5
All lamps that are out, or believed to be prone to failure, are replaced if necessary. LEDs are used whenever compatible
Any faulty components, or those with known issues, such as jacks, fuse-holders, feet, etc., are replaced
All PC boards are inspected; all questionable solder joints are re-flowed
All electrolytic caps are inspected for bulging or leakage, those that are at risk or have known issues are checked with the Huntron Tracker (allows evaluation while in-circuit so component does not need to be removed). All questionable caps are replaced with brand new parts, not NOS!
Tuner is cleaned and both AM & FM aligned
Front panel is cleaned & detailed before reassembly
Cabinet is cleaned & detailed, any wood is polished with Old English

Testing:

Once serviced, we set it up on our test bench and it did not disappoint, both channels produced a clean, distortion-free signal with no hum or buzz. All outputs and features were confirmed operational and and the tuner spins smoothly. We are in a remote area, still we were able to pull in all our local FM stations with the included wire antenna, activating both tuning meters and lighting the Stereo lamp. Further testing was done, if there is a particular function you would like to know more about just let us know before buying. What a great find on a rare, vintage piece of audio history!

Sony ST-5130 AM/FM Stereo Tuner (1971-74)

The Sony ST-5130 incorporates the most advanced techniques in FM tuner technology and full utilization of the available devices.

The FM i.f. section has eight solid-state filters (which are permanently-aligned ceramic filters) to contribute to the tuner's selectivity and long-term stability. The solid-state filters permit reception of weak signals without interference from strong adjacent stations.

The AM tuner employs high performance transistors to maintain high sensitivity with superior signal-to-noise ratio. Its excellent linearity and dynamic range assure low distortion at any strength signal. AM programs will be received with an audio quality that will surprise Hi-Fi oriented ears.

The ST-5130 also offers you the newest development in tuner design - the Impulse Noise Suppressor. Conventional tuners, even those of high quality, are inevitably affected by impulse-noise caused by ignition, fluorescent lights, generators, or motors. When impulse noise occurs, the amplitude of the desired input signal is disturbed by the impulse.

If the impulse is too strong to be removed by the limiter characteristic of the tuner, the impulse remains audible. In the SONY INS system, the pulse discriminator is activated when the noise pulse occurs, and cuts the disturbed signals momentarily. The pulse begins and ends within so short a time that the human ear does notice the " hole" in the sound, and hears the program clearly. This system is especially effective in FM recording.

Five stage limiter, including a three stage symmetrical diode limiter, provides an excellent capture ratio and AM suppression effect.
FET used for the MPX part in order to suppress distortion and obtain sufficient S/N.
FET used in the muting circuit.
The AM part reduces beat interference, interference, distortion, etc.
Amplifier for headphones and a dedicated volume.
Multi-path observation terminal is mounted, and by connecting it to an oscilloscope, the state of the antenna and more accurate tuning can be confirmed.
75 Ω coaxial connector is mounted.
Two output terminals, fixed and variable.
Center 0 tuning meter.
High-blend circuit, noise can be reduced with little loss of stereo effect when radio waves are weak and the S/N of the stereo broadcast transmission is insufficient.
