Complete original edition of the December 1935 issue of The National Geographic Magazine, with large-format fold-out color lithographed double-hemisphere map of the world.

  • The map opens to a generous 23" x 44" and depicts the world on an azimuthal equal-area projection.

  • Solid red lines on the map show domestic and international airways.

  • The only transatlantic flights then in operation were between South America and Europe via Africa.

  • When this map was printed, the North Atlantic still presented challenges for aviators due to weather and the huge distances involved, coupled with the lack of stopping points.

  • Early transatlantic services, consequently, focused more on the South Atlantic, where the map shows two routes.

  • It also shows one airline route across the Pacific, with stops at Honolulu, Midway, Wake, Guam, and Manila.

  • The map also shows principal railroad lines, canals, glaciers, capital cities, major towns, and political boundaries as they existed prior to the Second World War.

  • It was lithographed by A. Hoen & Company, Baltimore and published by the National Geographic Society as a supplement to the magazine.

  • Articles in the magazine span a range of subjects, including the capital cities of Australia, the fortress in the Aden Protectorate guarding the entrance to the Red Sea, the Oberammergau Passion Play, the countryside homelands of the Roman poet Horace, along with numerous full- and partial-page advertisements.

  • Among the advertisers are Hamilton Watches, Matson Line, RCA Victor, Graflex, Cunard White Store, Havoline Motor Oil, Alcoa, Hoover, Bell Telephone, and Coca-Cola.

  • Condition:  Map and magazine are in very good condition. The map is bright and clean, with two faint spots and no rips, tears, or writing. It folds to approximately 9¾" x 6" and is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. The magazine is complete and intact, with a small scuff on the cover and minor wear at the head and tail of the spine. The contents are clean and tight. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
