Up for sale is a very nice, original, hand colored copper engraving of a butterfly / moth from Edward Donovan's The Natural history of British Insects and was published circa 1800. This piece measures approximately 9 x 5.5 inches and is plate number 267.

The full title of the books from which this came are: The natural history of British insects explaining them in their several states, with the periods of their transformations, their food, oeconomy, &c. together with the history of such minute insects as require investigation by the microscope, the whole illustrated by coloured figures, designed and executed from living specimens London Printed for the author, and for F. and C. Rivington, 1792-1813.16 volumes with a total of 576 plates (568 colored)

This piece is generally in pretty nice condition with some wear and aging, some discoloration and light staining particularly around the edges. Outside of where it was removed from the book there are no rips or tears. The cut on this piece is a bit irregular but I have not re clipped it. I try to leave as much paper for whomever is framing it to work with as possible.

If making an offer on multiple prints please divide the total offer price by the number of prints and make the same offer for each print. I will either accept or decline all of them. One other note, these came from an estate and the individual was an interior decorator and using these in some of her designs. She had multiple copies of this book and, in a number of cases, I have multiple copies of the same print for sale. If this is the case the number listed as available will be two.

Please email with questions and see my store for other great items. If you are looking for more of the Donovan prints go to my store and search it using Donovan.
