WHAT IS A PCHAK?

The pchak, (sometimes spelled pichok or pichoq in English), is the national Uzbek handmade knife.

Since time immemorial, the pchak has been more than a simple tool or a combat weapon. It was the very totem of masculinity, a powerful amulet and a participant in many rites and sacraments. That is why the great skill of creating poetic, richly decorated blades has been preserved within Uzbekistan.

Uzbek knives have properties unique to the culture of Central Asia. The width of the blade is greater than the diameter of the handle. The typical handle is made of wood or horn.

A distinctive feature of the Uzbek knives is the brand, known as the “tamga”. This is the design that adorns the blade. As a rule, the main elements in the tamga are the crescent moon - the symbol of faith - the stars, and the symbol of cotton. In times gone by, it was believed that the number of stars in the tamga mark indicated the number of children of the master knife maker. These days, the stars are, more likely, attributed to tradition.

On modern blades, the tamga mark can be anything. The master will adorn his blades with stylistic images of anything he holds dear. Two main methods are used - chemical branding, which results in the color of the metal changing to create the design, or engraving.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR UZBEK PCHAK

A handcrafted pchak must be treated with respect, and requires special care instructions.

To prevent the formation of rust, the knife should be kept dry and stored in vertical wooden stands. A pchak is designed to be in constant use, and without that, the blade can suffer. The more you use your pchak, the longer it will keep its appearance.

If you want to display our Uzbek knives as collectors items, we suggest that you rub the pchak with fat or oil. This will help to preserve them for generations.

ABOUT US

Welcome to our eBay store!

Uzbek Knife offers authentic, unique, handmade goods which have been produced in the heart of Central Asia.

As our name suggests, we specialize in the traditional Uzbek knife known as a pchak, or pichoq - the traditional hunting, survival, bushcraft and kitchen knife native to Uzbekistan. With a pchak by your side, you will be transported to the mysterious world of the ancient Uzbek nomads, whether it is your trusty companion on a camping trip or in the kitchen. Every handmade knife we sell comes with a branded leather sheath to protect it and help you carry it when camping.

Using only natural materials, every item is made by hand, with precision, to the highest quality. Our knives are made by a master of the art in his family studio in Chust, the famous knife making area of the Namangan region and Shakhrikhan, second famous knife making area of the Andijan region.

Over generations, Chust and Shakhrikhan developed as the knife capitals of Uzbekistan as knife makers gathered together here to learn from one another and perfect their skills. We are proud to continue that legacy. Our studio has a collaborative model, with the best artisans in each particular skill (e.g blade forging, handle making) working together to create a single knife.

If you have any specific requirements or wish to know more about our knives, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We hope you will be delighted with our service. Every client is important to us.
