Antique Victorian Stacking Postal Weights Set of 4

I. CONDITION

Excellent. USED. Previously owned. Heavy use. These weights are accurate-grade.  Well maintained.

• Item’s Background - Balance-Scale Collector's Estate Sale Item, Pasadena, Ca.

• Working Condition – Excellent. These weights are fully functional and perform as originally intended.  (See weight calibration testing table, below.)

• Cosmetic Condition – Lots of character. Shows well: quite a few British imperial (♕) inspection stamps. There is considerable interesting wear, marring, pitting, or corrosion. One of these weights, the 4-ounce, evinces a curious repair attempt using molten lead. (See pics.) While this flaw does not dramatically affect the accuracy of the weight, it certainly does add character.

•  Note- The latter-period more pristine (Georgian, est.) 2-ounce of the postal weights shows little or no signs of usage wear or crown stamping and is included because it was originally acquired at auction together with the rest of the set. (See photo.)

II. DESCRIPTION

Manufacturer – Not known, no craft-house hallmarks. (Likely cast in Britain by Avery which often functioned as the Royal Post Office (RPO) supplier.)

• Current Retail Replacement Value - Difficult to determine. No equivalent. These are old-fashioned antique type balance-style scale weights currently replaced by pocket digital battery powered versions. Brass weight sets like these are no longer made.

Key Features:

• Functionality - Old-fashioned but fully functional.

• Practical Use - In this era of accurate digital-electric scales, old fashioned balance-type scales and weights may be obsolete, but these weights remain an excellent attractive nostalgic curio display piece.  

• Component Materials – Precision Cast Brass.

• General Maintenance - These weights will eventually tarnish in air slightly. Every 5 years or so, I recommend a casual wipe-down using something like Tarn•X® or, better yet, Turtle Wax® Heavy Duty Auto Wax Rubbing compound to better retard tarnishing. 

(Note: When using Tarn•X, it is important to quench the de-tarnishing chemical reaction by wiping down the object with water and a dry towel within a few moments after application. Treated brass items will then stay bright and shiny golden much longer by doing so.)
