Fantastic rare find.  This is a WWI Canvas officer's garment bag that belonged to Captain W.H. Harnisch who served in the 166th 42 Division in France during WWI.  The 42 Division, also called the Rainbow Division was the 4th unit to land in France.  It was assembed in August 1917 at Camp Mills, NY, four months after the American entry into World War I.  The 42nd arrived overseas to the Western Front of Belgium and France in November 1917, one of the first of the AEFs to arrive (American Expeditionary Forces).  The division was made up of soldiers from 26 states and as a resutl was designated the Rainbow Division.  This bag belongedd to Capt. W.H. Harnisch who was originally from Syracuse, NY.  He graduated from the University of Maryland school of dentistry in 1917.  He was born in 1892 and died in 1952, and he served in the Dental Corp, US Army Signal Corp of the Rainbow Division.  The bag measures 50" by 26 1/2".  Overall good condition but the wooden dowel rod is missing from the top and there is some water staining and surface soil is evident.  The handle is wrapped in leather.

Please read my sales policies before buying or bidding. By purchasing or bidding on my items you are agreeing to be bound by these terms. COMBINED SHIPPING: I can only combine shipping charges for multiple purchases if you put all your items in your shopping cart and request a combined invoice from me, and pay from that invoice, additionally, I can only combine items in one box if all the items can safely be packaged together. Most of my items are used, vintage or antique and come directly from estate auctions. I try to describe my items as accurately and honestly as possible and to disclose any signs of wear or imperfections that I see. Please review the photos and information provided prior to buying or bidding on my items. Please do not assume any details, and email me with any questions you might have prior to purchase or bidding and I will be happy to provide any additional details or photos that I can.  The disclosed condition of any item includes both the written description and the contents of the photos, so any mark, defect, anomaly, flaw, damage, etc. that can be visibly seen in a photo constitutes disclosure of such condition regardless of whether or not it is further described elsewhere in the listing.

Payment: Payment in full is required within 4 days of purchase, after that ebay will automatically cancel the transaction and the item will be relisted.

Shipping: The quoted shipping costs in my listings are based on U.S. Postal Service (USPS) rates and include the cost of insurance and packing materials.  I reserve the right to require buyer signature confirmation of package delivery and acceptance for any shipment at my discretion. I really care about my business, and I love vintage antiques and collectibles, so I care very much that all my items arrive safely for your enjoyment. I weigh each item after protectively wrapping it to the degree I believe is necessary for it to arrive at your door safely, and that is the weight used to calculate your shipping charges. I will ship Next Business day, (within one full next business day after receipt of cleared payment).  Please don't rate my performance based on how long it takes the post office to deliver your package. Please note that that postal rates are based on weight categories and only the highest weight limit in each category appears on your postage label (it doesn't mean that is exactly what your package weighed, only that the weight of your package fell within this category). For example, if your package weighed 2lb 2oz, your label would show 3 lbs because one USPS rate covers everything over 2lbs but under 3lbs. International Shipping: I offer International shipping to many locations and international packages will be sent either USPS Priority International or 1st Class International depending on a combination of factors including size, weight, and value. Delivery estimates for international packages vary greatly depending on location. Import duties, taxes and charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges. These charges are the buyer's responsibility so please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying or bidding. In accordance with U.S. and International Governmental regulations, all shipments will be shown as sales of merchandise, and all values will be stated at their actual sales value. eBay will be notified immediately about any buyer requesting that information on customs documents be altered or falsified. In no event will Seller ever be responsible for reimbursing Buyer for any such import duties, taxes or other customs charges even if the item is later returned, and regardless of the reason for any such return.

Returns: Please contact me immediately before opening a return case if there is any problem with your item so we can work things out. If notified within thirty (30) days of the day your item is delivered to you, I will provide a refund of the purchase price of the item (not including original shipping) upon the safe return of the item to me, and you are responsible for paying the cost of return shipping, except as noted below. If there is a gross inaccuracy in the listing, or if the item has been damaged during shipping, your refund will also include your original shipping charges, and I will pay for the return shipping back to me (if I request the item back). I try very hard to accurately describe all items I offer for sale, and deal predominantly in antique and vintage items from estate sales which are normally sold as-is and with no return policy of any kind; however, in accordance with the best selling practices of this site, I do accept returns, but can't absorb the out of pocket cost of shipping when a return is due to buyer remorse or any reason other than a gross inaccuracy in my listing information or damage in transit. All items returned to me must be unused by you and returned to me in their original condition, and be returned in their original packaging and protection, or using packaging and protection of at least the same quality as that which was used to ship the item to you. While it is uncommon for insurance claims to be filed, damage or loss can occur in transit, so in the rare instance where an insurance claim is required, there is paperwork to be completed by both buyer and seller. By purchasing this item you agree to comply with the completion of any paperwork necessary to file and process an insurance claim if the situation arises which may include your providing photos of any damaged item and the shipping container and all packaging and you may be required to hold onto the item and all packaging until the claim has been resolved; further, regarding any refund claim asserting a gross inaccuracy regarding the listing or damage to the item, you hereby agree to provide clear pictures to me of any damage or misrepresentation asserted in such refund claim.
