The first stage of the Chernobyl NPP (the first and second power units with RBMK-1000 reactors) was built in 1970-1977, the second stage (the third and fourth power units with similar reactors) was built on the same site by the end of 1983. In 1981, 1.5 km southeast of the first-second stage site, construction began on the third stage - the fifth and sixth power units with the same reactors, which was stopped after the accident at the fourth power unit with a high degree of readiness of the facilities
