It represents the classic constellations of the southern sky as figures above a globe southern Africa, South America and the South Pole "Terra Australis incognita". Famous astronomers with their instruments are depicted in the lower corners. The title cartouches are carried by grotesque, winged creatures. From the monumental work "Harmonia Macrocosmica Seu Atlas Universalis Et Novus".

English description:

This rare and very decorative celestial map shows all classic zodiacs of the Southern hemisphere above a globe that depicts South Africa, South America and Antarctica ("Terra Australis incognita"), surrounded by astronomers in the lower corners and flying monsters in the upper corners. This genuine copper engraving was designed by Andreas Cellarius (1596-1665) and published by Pieter Schenk (1660 - 1711) and Gerard Valk (1652 - 1726) in 1708. The map measures 43 x 50 cm (plate size) and is in good condition. There is some light browning of the paper by age and the centerfold has been backed with thin Japanese paper to restore an unobtrusive split in the upper and lower margin. The map derives from the monumental celestial atlas "Harmonia Macrocosmica Seu Atlas Universalis Et Novus".
