Description:

Up for auction is an extraordinary philatelic treasure that comes around once in a quarter-century - the elusive 1942 South American Soccer Tournament postmark on cover! This marks my first encounter with this remarkable piece in my 25 years of collecting. Previously, I had the privilege of witnessing it only on a stamp.

The postmark, though somewhat faded and bearing the marks of a handstamp, adds to its authenticity, telling the tale of a bygone era. What makes this item truly exceptional is its rarity - considered by me as the most difficult to obtain for the Uruguay country within this specific topic.

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT

The South American Championship of 1942, now known as the Copa America, was the 16th edition of the tournament. However, it was a unique edition as it was held during a challenging period – World War II. The tournament took place in Uruguay from January 10 to February 7, 1942.

Several South American countries withdrew from the competition due to the global conflict. Argentina, Brazil, and Chile all initially decided not to participate. Uruguay and Paraguay were the only two teams left, and they played a two-legged final. This unique format made the 1942 edition the only Copa America with a final between just two teams.

The matches were held on February 1 and February 7, 1942. Uruguay won both legs of the final, securing a 2-0 victory in the first match and a 3-0 victory in the second. With these results, Uruguay became the champion of the 1942 South American Championship.

The absence of several nations and the unique format due to the war make the 1942 Copa America a distinctive and historically significant edition in the tournament's long history.
