Original
antique lithographed fold-out 1861 map of the entrance to Coos Bay, on
Oregon's coast, printed
more than 160 years ago.
-
This map has good detail, including
the location of a shipwreck in the shallows of South Slough, southeast
of
Guano Rock.
-
Other named places and features include Cape Gregory, Pigeon Point,
Fearless Rock, Tunnel Point, Koos Head, and Point Yoakum.
-
This is a coastal survey map and it shows
soundings in feet, magnetic
variation, navigable channels, the location of breakers, and a table of
tides.
- Aside from one house, there is minimal onshore detail.
-
The map was published by the U.S. Coast Survey, under the direction of
A.D. Bache, Superintendent.
-
It is titled Preliminary Chart of Entrance to Koos Bay,
Oregon and is dated 1861 in the title.
- It was lithographed by Charles Knickerbocker of Albany,
New York, and issued in Report
of the Superintendent of the Coast Survey, showing the Progress of the
Survey during the Year 1861, published in Washington, D.C. by
the Government Printing Office in 1862.
-
The image area measures 14¾" x 17½",
and the map is drawn on a scale of 1:20,000. The triangulation
topography and hydrography are by James S. Lawson.
-
Condition:
Like many government fold-out maps of
the
mid-19th century, it is printed on a lightweight paper which has
toned slightly along the folds. The impression is strong, and
the
map is
bright and clean, with no
marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the
reverse side.
-
It is an original, authentic U.S. Coast Survey document, not
a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be
genuine.
-
This antique chart provides an important historical depiction of
the
entrance to the S-shaped inlet where the Coos River enters the Pacific
Ocean in southwestern Oregon.
-
Today the port of Coos Bay is the largest
and deepest port between San Francisco, California and the Columbia
River.
