18th to 19th Century Private Purchase Boarding Axe

A very interesting Boarding axe, this one appears to be private purchase. Just by looking at the overall design we can narrow it down to likely British made.

The axe head is in fine shape, the wooden handle is also marked at the base with a number "3", it is also clear the axe and shaft have suffered some serious trauma and that the axe may have been adjusted and repositioned.
The axe head is in fine shape and has a crescent moon shape with a wicked rear spike and is stamped "452".

Boarding axes weren't issued to individuals but stored or mounted next to gun and they were not regarded as personal weapons.

When these forms of axes became obsolete due to ships no longer being powered by sails, they were brought ashore. Many of these axes were given a second life whether on a farm or homestead, but in many instances the handles were shortened to make them more manageable. Many found a home and life in the fire service.

The axe is being sold in as is condition and kindly only serious offers!
