1821 antique engraved map of Asia, in original hand
color,
printed more than 200 years ago.
- The map is printed on a
large double-page sheet,
surrounded by
letterpress text with geographical and statistical details, including a
historical summary, dating back more than 4000 years to Nimrod and the
Assyrian monarchy.
- The map traces the extent of the empires of Genghis Khan
and Tamerlane.
- Other named places and features include Arabia, Persia,
Independent
Tartary, India, China, Siam, Borneo, Japan, Syria, Ceylon, Sumatra,
Tibet,
Samarkand, Armenia, Caspian Sea, Philippine Islands, Yemen,
Constantinople, Bay of Bengal, and Siberia or Russian Tartary.
- The map was drawn by Jehoshaphat Aspin and engraved by
Joseph Yeager.
- It was published in Lavoisne's
Genealogical, Historical,
Chronological, and Geographical Atlas by Matthew Carey
& Son, Philadelphia, 1821. It is dated in the cartouche and in
the lower margin. It is identified as Plate 63, from the third
Philadelphia edition
of the atlas.
- Overall sheet size is 45 x 55.4 cm [17¾" x 21¾"],
and the image area of the map itself measures 31 x 31.2 cm [12¼" x
12¼"].
- Condition: It is in very good condition,
bright and
clean, with some faint toning at the center fold and no
rips, tears, or writing. It is blank
