A Reference & Distance Map of the
State of New York
by
Justin Pierce, Printed by S. Babcock,
New Haven, Conn., 1831
Large hand-colored map printed on two sheets of joined bank
note paper folding into gilt stamped leather covers. Map size (with index): 29 3/4
x 20 inches (sheet); cover size: 5 x 3 1/2 inches. The map illustrates cities
and towns, counties, roads, route of the proposed New York and Erie railroad,
and other details. Below the map at bottom left, a pair of profiles show the
elevation and distances along the Erie and Champlain Canals. A large index
containing reference positions of towns with populations from the 1830 census
and a table of distances is placed below the map at the bottom of the sheet.
Condition: Covers scuffed with a bit of loss to the front
board with partial splitting of the spine. The map has numerous fold
separations - many of which have been repaired with archival tissue tape on the
reverse side – with small losses at a couple of fold junctions. There is also
some toning, foxing and staining where the map is glued to the covers. All in
all, a good copy of a rare map.
