Item Description:
I am pleased to offer this original and old hand-made Japanese
sword, or Nihonto, brought back from
WWII. The sword is a Gendaito katana
made by the famous WW2-era
swordsmith Yoshihara Kuniie and
certified with NTHK papers. The blade and the mountings are in MINT condition. The sword has a
blade length of 26.5 inches (67cm). It features a well-grained, highly visible,
and expertly crafted ko-itame hada. The
hamon is an expertly crafted choji gunome
in nie deki that at times features
overlapping juka choji. The hamon
is vibrant and full of nie and deep activities. The hamon is present the
length of the blade ending in a midare boshi.
The hamon is highly refined and textured, featuring activities like sunagashi, kinsuji, and inazuma in and along the hamon. The
workmanship in the hamon and activities are at a very high level, in line with
the top gendaito swordsmiths.
The tang is signed Oite
Nihonso Yoshihara Kuniie Saku. It is dated Koki 2600 Nen Chu Shu – mid-Autumn of the 2600th year of
Emperor Jimmu, or Fall 1940. The tang is
ubu, or unshortened, and displays
fine yasurime file-marks. Yoshihara Kuniie was among the most highly regarded gendaito swordsmiths. He was well-known
for excelling as an early student of Kurihara Akihide, making swords on the
grounds of Toyama Mitsuru, and setting up his own Nihonsho forge, at which this
sword was made. He worked in a variety of styles but specialized in Bizen-den. He
is also credited as being a prolific teacher of swordsmithing with many
students, eventually passing his skills to his family which now include the
famous modern-day swordsmith Yoshihara Yoshindo.
The blade also comes with NTHK papers attesting to the authenticity and quality of the
blade.
The blade comes with a shirasaya storage mounting that is in MINT condition. The blade
is in MINT condition. There
are no nicks, no rust, and very few if any scratches along its length. There are
no major flaws like hagire.
Given the high degree of craftsmanship displayed, NTHK papers, and the reputation
of the swordsmith, I highly recommend
this sword to a collector of Japanese swords or WWII militaria.

while I think I am accurate, I can not guarantee that aspect as I am not an
