Description

A VERY LOVELY EARLY TO MID-VICTORIAN ROSEWOOD PICTURE FRAME ~
... a fabulous old character-filled mount, this frame has a lot of age as can be seen both verso & also by the original makers' nails to corners & hand-spliced veneers ~

Measuring approximately 25 & 1/4" by 22 & 1/2" (External) ~
With a rebate (to fit a picture) of 18 & 3/4" by 15 & 3/4" (Internal) ~
Or, in centimetres 47.5cm by 40cm ~
Sight size is 16 & 1/2" by 13 & 1/2" ~
(Sight size will be 18" by 15" sans slip)
With a depth of 1 & 1/4" ~
The frieze width is 3 & 3/4" ~

... dating at a guess to around 1850 (but could be Georgian) this is a fabulous large-sized frame with bags of antique character & charm with an excellent wide stepped/rippled border with an ancient rosewood grain & patina, not painted to sides in black as was the custom, this frame has rosewood veneers extended to all sides of the frame, this a sure sign of quality ~ to my mind it is in very good condition but naturally, is showing good signs of age ~

... this is a frame with such character, frames such as this were often used for highly treasured Samplers or religious embroideries, they work very well with old master artworks but in truth, you could match a whole plethora of art-pieces with it ~

~ it's a fabulous frame design, the border is beautifully rippled with various soft ogees which play tricks with your mind, the light contrasts with the wonderful warm rosewood tone & all these smooth bevelled sections run down into the sight having the effect of drawing your eye into the painting ~

... entirely constructed & mitred by hand from a pine carcass yet covered in rosewood veneers & also at the sides, the warmth of the rosewood grain is coming through beautifully in places & you can see the old nails in the corners and just about also see the clever intricate splicing of the veneers at the sides of the frame, a sure sign of this maker's skill ~

... it dates at a guess to around 1850 but may well be older this frame has more than a hint not just of
Victorian fine art society but also of Georgian Grand design opulence ~

... it comes with its original gilt slip always a nice feature to see, the slip is flat & blocky with a beautiful lemon-gilt tone again, contrasting wonderfully with the outer tone ~

... this is a frame that will suit an exceptional picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one; it is certainly a frame that will grace any wall ~

Thank you for looking ~

N.B. The photos were taken on various days, some bright sunny & some quite gloomy & so there are a few shadows & variations in tone in the pictures ~

If you have any questions please ask ~

Condition

In Very Good condition; in my opinion, the condition is very good, as one would expect in such an old mount there are a few losses but nothing too major, the main loss being at (see photo 23) one of the sides of the frame, roughly 2"long & 1/2"wide at its widest point, though I would suggest this will not be seen at all when the frame is hung, also on the same side there is a very slight lifting of the veneer, perhaps because of variations in temperature, just a couple of millimetres, again, I suggest that this won't be seen especially if you hang the frame with this section as the top rail & I mention just for 100% honesty in the listing; together with age commensurate signs of wear & tear, so we have the odd cracking to an inside edge (see photos 8 & 9) & the odd ding but overall I would say very good condition for the great age ~ incredibly there aren't any what I would call major losses to the face or frieze that I can see & the warmth of the rosewood grain is coming through beautifully in places ~ together with the odd age-commensurate ding here & there but in truth nothing particularly noteworthy ~ Age commensurate wear ~ With NO further damages OR losses ~

Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the very good antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...
