Stunning & imposing Victorian brass mounted bovine table snuff mull featuring a secret lock to the snuff compartment.

The snuff mull is constructed from two large Highland cow horns with brass finials to each tip of the horns. There is a large central brass banding with decorative rims on top of which sits the snuff box which is decorated with an applied red cabouchon stone which, combined with the Highland cow horns, suggests a strong Scottish influence. As can be seen from the photos the brass fittings have been further engraved-decorated with a continuous floral pattern.

To emphasise the quality of this piece, great effort has been taken to include a secret lock to the snuff box. It appears from the look of the box to the top that it is hinged and the lid must therefore be raised. However the correct way to open the lid is to place your fingers on the lid then slide it towards you, very clever!

The central brass banding is further decorated with an applied lozenge design with the whole piece sitting on three brass ball feet. To the back of the mull is a brass fitting & ring so it could be hung on a wall.

NOTE: The amazing quality of this snuff mull suggests it may have been commissioned by a Lord of the Manor for a large country estate or an exclusive club, possibly with a masonic connection.

Weight: 1.482 kg. Height: 210 mm. Length: 360 mm. Width: 170 mm.

Summary: As can be seen from the photos this is a rare & decorative Victorian table snuff mull which would enhance any partner's desk or study, particularly of anyone interested in hunting. Snuff mulls incorporating a pair of cow horns are quite rare, with most featuring a single horn. Good luck!
