Description

A LOVELY ANTIQUE VICTORIAN PICTURE FRAME ~

... an exquisite old picture frame with winsome Oak leaves & Acorn design ~ yes! with a few issues, bits of missing gesso & shellac here & there, yet on the whole an eminently useable frame with bags of ancient character & charm ~ please see the photos on this one ~

Measuring approximately 16 & 3/4" by 13 & 3/4(External) ~
With a rebate (to fit a picture) of 13 & 1/4" by 10 & 3/8" (Internal)~
Or, in centimetres 34cm by 26cm ~
Sight size is 11 & 5/8" by 8 & 5/8" ~
Or 12 & 1/2" by 9 & 1/2" without slip ~

... dating at a guess to around 1890 this is a wonderful antique frame with bags of period class & charm ~ Yes! it does have its issues, so there is damage aplenty! but I feel that frames such as this have a unique age-commensurate character all their own!

... constructed by hand from a pine carcass & then covered in a green shallac-type material which has over the years perished in sections ~ strangely the green outer sections (which is a wonderful Eucalyptus green by the way!) have survived pretty much intact, the inner raised gilded sections which beautifully depict oak leaves & acorns, seem to have suffered the most, as there are a good few missing bits the largest of which is around 5" by 1" but! weirdly the damage all seems to blend in perfectly with the green outer & gilt foliate sections ~ the corner joints are all strong & the gilt slip, which is the original is quite impressive & has lasted well & brings the whole thing together perfectly!

... I tend not to pick up too many ebonised frames these days & this is what I consider a 'shellac' type frame ~ many of them can be in pretty poor condition, the black (or green in this case) shellac coating can often perish in large sections rendering the frame useless but this one to my mind is still in good condition for the age ~

... it takes a certain type of person to see the beauty & the potential in a frame like this & I hope it ends up in a loving home ~

This frame will suit a special picture OR perhaps an image of a loved one, it is certainly a frame to grace any wall ~
Thank you for looking ~

Condition
In Very Good condition; as mentioned above, with lots of age-related damages (see all of the photos) some large sections of the raised gilded sections (I would say about 20%) are missing together with some losses at the edges & extremities; together with the odd minor age commensurate ding here & there to the border, but in truth nothing particularly noteworthy ~ Super strong joints ~ Age commensurate wear ~ With NO further damages OR losses ~

Please refer to the photographs ~ They accurately represent the very good antique condition ~ Any significant damages OR losses are always shown in the photos ...
