Panteleimon Kulish (1819–1897) was a writer, folklorist, ethnographer, linguist, translator, critic, editor, and publisher. Together with T. Shevchenko and M. Kostomarov, he formed the famous Dnieper "Trinity" of 1840-1860, which laid the foundations of national-historical identity and new literature.
In the late 1850s, Kulish composed the first phonetic alphabet for the Ukrainian language. In general, Kulish's spelling is the basis of the modern Ukrainian alphabet, although the original "Kulishivka" has undergone a significant transformation.
